Milford Care Centre - Advanced Communication in Palliative & End-Of-Life Care

Description: Communication is important in all health care settings, but is critical at
the end of life. Effective interdisciplinary team working is key and a
prerequisite for successful interactions with patients and families. Health
professionals often lack the communication skills or confidence required
to work with this patient group in situations that can involve dealing
with challenging emotions and complex clinical situations. Using
simulated patients, structured feedback and small group discussion
facilitates health professionals to develop competence and confidence in
a safe, comfortable and non-threatening environment. These approaches
are central to this course, based on the Dr. Wilkinson Model of
Communication Skills training from the UK.

This 3-day course aims to increase health professionals’ awareness of
their communication skills and to explore strategies to enhance their
ability to elicit and respond to patients’ concerns and deal more
effectively with difficult communication situations. Experiential learning
is the key to this course in communication skills. This course uses
simulated role play with actors, small group discussion, reflection on case
studies, health professional-led clinical scenarios, and formative selfassessment
of communication skills.

This course is designed for members of the multi-professional health care
team who are working with patients with advanced progressive disease.
To undertake this course the participant must have two years clinical
experience as a qualified practitioner.

Prior to attending the course, participants will be required to submit a
tape recording of a patient assessment.

Hidden Losses - Hidden Grief

Presenter: Breffni  McGuinness, Training & Development Officer with the Irish Hospice Foundation.
Breffni is a Dramatherapist and member of the Irish Association of Creative  Arts Therapists (IACAT).

Description: The practical and emotional support of friends, colleagues and family are key elements in helping people to come to terms with their losses.
What happens though, when one is denied this support because the loss may go against what is acceptable in society
(eg adoption, abortion, suicide, gay partnership)? This is where grief may become hidden.

Anticipatory Grief

Date: Friday 24 February 2012

Time: 9.15am-4.15pm

Presenter:  Ann Keating has been a  Medical Social Worker for over 27 years with a particular interest in loss and bereavement.
She recently retired from a Dublin hospice where she had worked for the past 21 years.

Description: Many would argue that the grief process starts before death. What are the implications for family or friends of considering grief through
the course of an illness? This workshop will explore the concept of anticipatory grief by examining whether preparation for and warning of a death can
play a positive role in later grieving. The workshop will use presentations and discusiion to support learning.
